What Are You Betting On?
You place your bets on the table. As the wheel spins, you hope that the ball lands on the numbers you’ve chosen. This is how things work in the game of roulette, but it seems to me that there is a similar dynamic present in life as well.
We long for happiness, but the future is uncertain. We invest time and energy in some things and not in others, hoping that these bets will bring a harvest.
This week, I invite you to do a two-part meditation:
1) What am I betting on? That is, where do I hope my happiness will come from? (There are many possible answers: pleasure, wealth, career, friends, family, or God, to name a few.)
2) How well does the way that I am living my life today embody my hope? That is, if an objective observer looked at my life, would they agree about where I have placed my hope?
God bless,
Dan
“As Emmanuel, Cardinal Suhard says, ‘To be a witness does not consist in engaging in propaganda, nor even in stirring people up, but in being a living mystery. It means to live in such a way that one's life would not make sense if God did not exist.’”
