Thinking About Shoes

“And then I realized that no matter how long I researched and thought about shoes, I wasn’t going to find a good fit. What I actually needed to do was to try on a bunch of different pairs. This would mean going to the store or ordering a ton and returning the ones that didn’t fit.” This is a paraphrase of what my friend said to me in a recent conversation about trying to replace his favorite shoes that he had worn for over six years. He used this experience to show that for some things in life, you need to take action in order to make progress. Thinking about shoes isn’t enough to replace an old pair. You need to try on different shoes until you find a pair that works.

This week, I invite you to ask yourself:

Where in my life am I trying to “think my way to a pair of new shoes”? That is, where am I trying to solve a problem by reflection rather than taking the actions that would get me there? What is the next action I need to take in order to get closer to a solution?

God bless,
Dan
