Take a Swing at Building Trust

Have you ever hid behind vague language to avoid putting yourself on the hook? I know I have. But my experience is that vague language produces vague results. When I say things like, “I’ll work on it,” or “I’ll try to do better,” or even “I’ll get that done,” but without giving a clear deadline for when it will be finished, I find that things tend to drift. It is also harder to build trust with others and with ourselves without taking the risk of making commitments using clear and specific language with deadlines.

This week, I invite you to explore:

How frequently do I take a swing at building trust through speaking clear and specific commitments with deadlines? How frequently do I avoid the risk of commitment using vague language? What are the costs of doing so? What are the benefits? How might my life change if I took more swings at building trust?

God bless,
Dan

P.S. Next week’s letter will explore how to build trust even when you miss.
