Productivity Towards What?
As research for his book, Slow Productivity, Cal Newport surveyed close to 700 people asking them to define productivity for their particular field. The answers varied wildly, but a common theme emerged. Nearly all of them lacked a clear description of the deeper purpose of productivity. Newport says that the “answers didn’t include specific goals that could differentiate between doing the job well vs. poorly.”
This week, I invite you to consider:
What is my definition of productivity for my professional life? What specific outcomes would tell me whether I am doing my job well or poorly?
What is my definition of “productivity” for my personal life? What specific outcomes would tell me whether I am doing well or poorly (in my roles as father, mother, husband, wife, son, daughter, etc.)?
God bless,
Dan
