Give Your Word Like a Mountaineer

How well do you steward your word? Which of the following two analogies more accurately describes you?

  1. I give my word with reckless abandon. I launch my word out there, and hope that I keep it. I am like a person who ties himself to a cannonball, loads it in a cannon and fires. Sometimes the cannonball pulls me after itself, sometimes it doesn’t.

  2. I give my word with foresight and care. I carefully assess what it will take to keep my word before I give it. I am like a mountaineer who looks at the peak ahead and calculates what it will take to get to the top before he climbs. I climb to the summit with deliberate and steady movement, always making it to the top.

This week, I invite you to grow in your stewardship of your word.

How well do you steward the word that you give to others? The word that you give to yourself? What would change for you if you gave your word more like a mountaineer?

God Bless,
Dan
