Beat the Next Boss

In many video games, there is often a more challenging enemy, called a boss, at the end of each level. To get to the next level you have to beat the boss. When you’ve defeated the boss at each level, you beat the game. You rescue the princess, save the world, etc. The path to victory is clear. You just have to beat every boss and work your way through all the levels.

What if your life were like a video game? What would victory mean for you? Is it getting a new job? Buying a house? Finding the love of your life? To succeed in these areas, you might have to persevere through hard times and conquer challenges, working your way through levels and defeating bosses.

Think of the future you want to create. Suppose that it were revealed to you that if you made it through a certain number of steps, you would be guaranteed success. For example, your revelation might be one of the following:

  • To upgrade to a better job, all you need to do is: update your LinkedIn, complete a 30 hour certification program, and apply to 40 positions.

  • To buy your first home, all you need to do is: create a budget, automate deposits into your savings and investments, and persevere in these systems for 100 months to have enough for a down payment.

  • To meet your future spouse, all you need to do is: create an online profile, message 1000 people and go on 30 mediocre dates.

Maybe the process would look different but the road to every success is composed of a finite number of next steps.

This week, I invite you to consider:

What’s your vision for a particular future you want to create?

How committed are you to “beating the game”?  What is the level you are currently working on? What boss are you trying to defeat? How many levels and bosses are you committed to work through in order to win?

God bless,
Dan
